Chapter Twenty-Six

Fire and Earth Command

Jarah and Tegan left the water elementals reluctantly. They felt they could have stayed with them forever. The others all agreed that it was an enjoyable lesson, but they were looking forward to becoming acquainted with the other elementals.

“I think we’re both water elements, Tegan,” said Jarah. She nodded, smiling.

“I already know I’m fire,” said Kex.

Adain laughed. “I have no doubts about that!”

Kex scowled at him, but he reached out his hand and grasped hers with a smile.

They didn’t have long to wait for their next lesson. After a refreshing sleep, Finn was in his usual spot at the gate. “I can see you’re already getting used to Ardvale,” he said, with a chuckle. “How is the manifesting coming along?”

“Well, we’re not starving,” said Djana. “I manifested a breakfast this morning I haven’t had in years!” They laughed and talked at the same time, telling Finn what they were manifesting for themselves.

“I had a bad experience with that today,” said Tegan. “I flashed back to my village—it was burning, and I could hear the screams—then I had to put the fire out in my house. Fortunately, I was able to manifest a bucket of water just in time!”

Finn chuckled. “It’s just as easy to create unpleasant manifestations as it is to create wonderful ones. Here in Ardvale, creating is instantaneous. It doesn’t happen in your world. Usually, one must wait a while for the thought to manifest but manifest it does. You have to work at it a little harder, and there are all other kinds of factors involved, other’s freewill choices and creations, laws of physics, for example. But here, you do not have that. It seems magical, but it is because we have not created barriers to our manifesting abilities. We’re able to take these abilities out there with us, to your worlds, to assist the life forms we represent. That is what we are teaching you. To remove those barriers and become masters.

“Your lessons with each element will still take time, but fortunately, here in Ardvale, time does not exist. Yesterday was a start, and today is another beginning, but we must start somewhere. And here we are!”

They had arrived at a cave opening in a rock wall. Finn led them through the cave, and they made their way by the light of the flame in his palm through tunnels deep into the earth. It grew warmer, and they soon found out why. Ahead of them, a reddish-orange glow appeared, a small river of…they stopped, perplexed. Molten rock?

“It’s called lava,” said Finn. “And now, I’ll leave you with our fire friends.” He disappeared again, and they sat down and waited.

The cave was silent, dark, and empty. They sat until their rears grew numb and Kex began to snore, her head on Adain’s lap. They shuffled their feet, some got up to pace, but still, there was no sign of anything that could be a fire elemental.

“Should we just leave?” Tegan asked. She wasn’t looking forward to this anyway.
